EIN application routes: SSN, ITIN and foreign founders

Prepare an EIN application and understand when online or fax processing may be appropriate.

Choose a route after checking the facts

Begin with the accepted entity information, actual principal business location and responsible party. The route follows the IRS eligibility rules, not the applicant’s preferred turnaround time. An SSN or ITIN alone does not make every foreign-operated business eligible for the online tool. If a route is unavailable, prepare the appropriate alternative rather than changing factual answers to pass an online question.

What to prepare before an online session

For an eligible online application, have the correct entity name, mailing details, responsible-party information and reason for applying ready. The IRS tool has session limits and is not a general draft-storage service. Review the answers before submission and retain the resulting confirmation if issued. A live assistance session should leave control of private credentials and the application information with the client.

How fax preparation differs

Our foreign-applicant workflow uses fax where appropriate under the IRS instructions. Preparation includes checking Form SS-4 information and the applicable submission details. An application sent by fax is not the same as an EIN already assigned. Processing and follow-up depend on the IRS, so keep a copy of the submitted application and track the actual acknowledgement or assignment rather than assuming delivery completes the process.

Avoid duplicate and inconsistent requests

If someone has already applied for the entity, disclose the date, route and known outcome before starting another request. Different spellings, addresses or responsible-party details can make follow-up harder. Where an EIN already exists, obtaining confirmation may be the appropriate task instead of applying again. Do not share the full number through a public website enquiry; explain the issue first and arrange a suitable channel.

Understand the fee and package boundary

The IRS application is free. Infinity Filer charges for assistance, and EIN work is included in the LLC and C-Corp formation packages. A standalone service is useful when the entity already exists and the requested work is not part of an active package. Confirm whether the request is a new application, correction, status enquiry or replacement confirmation because those are different tasks and may have different scopes.

Your action checklist

  • Confirm the entity and principal business location
  • Identify the responsible party
  • Check for an earlier application
  • Choose the eligible submission route
  • Keep the application and official outcome
